How To Create A WhatsApp Channel

Introducing WhatsApp Channels:

A Discreet Method to Stay Updated Today, we’re thrilled to introduce Channels, a straightforward, dependable, and private means of receiving crucial notifications from individuals and groups, all within the WhatsApp platform. We’re creating Channels within a new section called “Updates,” where you’ll discover Status updates and the channels you’ve chosen to follow. This section is separate from your conversations with family, friends, and communities.

Channels serve as a one-way broadcast tool, allowing administrators to send text messages, photos, videos, stickers, and polls. To help you choose which channels to follow, we’re constructing a searchable directory, making it easy to find your interests, sports teams, updates from local authorities, and more. You can also access channels via invitation links shared in conversations, emails, or online postings.

Our goal is to build the most private broadcasting service possible. To start, we safeguard the personal details of both administrators and followers. As a channel administrator, your phone number and profile picture remain hidden from followers. Likewise, following a channel does not reveal your phone number to the administrator or other followers. The choice of whom to follow is entirely yours and remains confidential.

In line with our approach to messaging, we believe that Channel updates don’t need to linger indefinitely. Therefore, we store channel history on our servers for a maximum of 30 days and are exploring options to make updates disappear even faster from followers’ devices. Administrators can also choose to block screenshots and forwarding from their channels.

Lastly, administrators have the authority to decide who can follow their channel and whether it should be discoverable in the directory or not. While Channels aim to reach a broad audience, they are not end-to-end encrypted by default. We are considering the possibility of introducing end-to-end encrypted channels for specific audiences in the future, such as non-profit organizations or health institutions.

To Create Whatsapp Channels, we’re excited to collaborate with prominent global voices and select organizations in Colombia and Singapore, where Channels will initially be available. We’ll expand Channels to more countries and allow anyone to create a channel in the coming months.

We also see an opportunity to support administrators in building a business around their channels, using our expanding payment services and the option to promote specific channels in the directory for greater visibility.

Of course, the core of WhatsApp, centered around private messaging among friends, family, and communities, remains our top priority. However, the introduction of Channels is a significant step forward, fulfilling a request from our users over the years. We believe the time is right to present a straightforward, dependable, and private broadcasting tool, and we hope you enjoy using it in the months and years ahead.
